Hair Care Tips for Healthier Looking Hair

Hair Care - Knowing Your Hair Structure

We have about 100,000 hairs on our heads. Every hair has two separate structures: the hair follicle in the skin and the hair shaft we see.

The hair shaft is mostly made of a hard protein called keratin (the same protein that makes up our nails and teeth) in three layers. The cuticle is the outside layer that protect the two inner layers the cortex and the medulla - the air filled core that may not be present in some people with fine.

Hair Cuticle and Cortex

Hair cuticles are made up of overlapping scales and does not contain pigment. With healthy hair cuticles, the scales overlap tightly to protect the inner layers from damage and reflect light making your hair shine.

The Cortex is the inner layer that gives your hair strength, elasticity, texture, and color. When your hair is damaged, the hair cuticle overlapping scales may not lie down smoothly to reflect light. This makes your hair look dry. Because the overlapping scales doesn't overlap tightly, it can't provide proper protection to the inner layers and cause your hair to look dull and break.

Hair Care Tips

There is no doubt that chemical processed, excessive hair styling, and hair care product abuse can damage and weaken your hair - causing your hair to loose its shines and giving it a lifeless look.

Even if your hair is damaged through excesive hair styling, there are things you can do to give your hair a more healthy glow. When your hair feel dry and break easily, you need to use a deep-moisturizing conditioner. Hair conditioner smooths the hair cuticles so it overlap tightly to reflect light better - giving your hair more shines.

Healthy hair is important because it affect your appearance. The style, length, and condition of your hair will influence how people perceive who you are and how you see yourself. Soft shinny hair is a sign of good health. Dull looking hair often means vitamin deficiency or illness.
