Hair Dye Colors - The Right Hair Color For You
There are several types of hair color. What you want your hair color to achieve (cover gray or making a dramatic change) will determine which product you should use.
Permanent Hair Color
Permanent hair color make up about 50% of the hair coloring business. It’s more popular because it can provide better gray coverage, last the longest, and can offer the most dramatic change to your hair – instantly changing your hair color from dark to light or from light to dark.
With permanent hair color, chemicals such as peroxide and ammonia are required to give you the permanent result. The combination of these chemicals is designed to lighten your hair’s natural pigment (bleaching your hair) and depositing color in a one step process.
Although permanent hair color last the longest but it is also the most damaging to your hair. Long term use of permanent hair color can result in permanent damage to your hair – your hair may become dry and frizz and you may end up with flat and unnatural looking color. Also, permanent hair color will last until you cut your hair. You will have to deal with the roots about every 6 weeks.
Demipermanent Hair Color / Deposit Only
Demi-permanent hair color can brighten, add shines, and enhance your hair by depositing color that is the same darkness level or darker than your natural hair color. It can camouflage up to 75% of gray.
Demi-permanent color is more gentle on your hair than permanent hair color because it doesn’t contain ammonia. With the absence of ammonia, the natural pigment of your hair is not lightened. However, it does contain a small amount of peroxide so the color deposited can penetrate the hair shaft to allow for a more noticeable color enhancement.
Demi-permanent hair color gradually fades over a period of four to six weeks. With this coloring technique, you’re not altering the natural pigment of your hair, instead, you’re adding pigment to it, and because it fades over time, as the root grows out, it’s less noticeable.
If your hair is perm or has been colored, demi-permanent color can become a permanent color on your hair.
Semipermanent Hair Color
Semi-permanent color stains your hair cuticle layer to add color without changing your natural hair color dramatically. It doesn’t contain ammonia or peroxide so it won’t lighten your hair. It enhances the color of your hair and cover up to 50% of gray. With semi-permanent hair color, the color fades with each shampoo so the new growth is less obvious. Depending on the strength of the hair color product, semi permanent color can last from 6 – 12 shampoos.
Temporary Hair Color
Temporary color doesn’t contain ammonia, peroxide, or harsh chemicals. If you like to change your hair color often or you can’t make a full commitment to a color change then you should use temporary hair color. Standard temporary hair color can last up to 8 shampoos. But your choices of products can range from color that you can use to touch up the roots or cover a few grays to color that you can brush on for 24 hours and wash out.
