Hair Washing - Hair Shampooing Tips
The sebacious glands at the base of each hair shaft secrete sebum. As this natural oil make its way donw your hair, it coats and lubricate your hair with a greasy layer that softens your hair. The natural oil also smooths the hair's cuticle to better reflect light - making your hair look shiny. Because the natural oil on your hair also attract dirt and airborne debris, shampooing will clean your scalp and remove dirt and oil from your hair.
How Often to Shampoo Your Hair - Shampooing Curly Hair
How often to shampoo your hair is depended on whether you have straight or curly hair. If you have straight hair, shampoo and condition regularly for a soft, shinny, and radiant look.
Because it takes longer for the hair's natural oil to make its way down to the ends of curly hair, curly hair becomes fluffy if washed too often. If you have curly hair, try to limit washing your hair to 2 to 3 times a week.
When you shampoo your hair, you want to clean your scalp and remove dirt and oil from your hair. But shampooing too often will strip your hair of its natural oil. The lack of natural oil will cause the hair cuticle to stick out and doesn't reflect light making your hair look dry and dull. So shampooing everyday is not necessarily good for your hair.
If you do wash your hair daily, here are some simple hair care tips that will help to prevent your hair from drying and loosing its shines.
- Dilute your regular hair shampoo
- Look for hair shampoos that are labeled "everyday use"
- Alternate your regular shampoo with a gentle children's shampoo
Choosing The Right Hair Shampoo
The most important thing when caring for your hair is choosing the correct shampoo for your hair type. Most shampoos are labeled for fine, dry, normal, or oily hair. Use these labels as a guide when buying your hair shampoo.
If you have oily scalp with dry and chemically processed hair, you can use shampoo for normal hair. when you wash your hair concentrate more on the scalp and use a moisturinzing condiioner from mindstrand down to the ends.
How to Shampoo your hair
- Throughly wet your scalp and hair with warm or cool water.
- Apply a small amout of shampoo (a nickle or a quarter size dab is enough, even if you have long hair) to your palm and rub your hands together to evenly distribute the shampoo onto both of your hands.
- Apply the shampoo to your scalp with your finger tips. Concentrate on massaging gently. If your hair is easily tangled, as you work the shampoo into your hair, don't clump your hair together too much.
- Rinse with warm or cool water.
- Apply hair conditioner (optional)
- After rinsing, gently blot your hair dry. Don't rub your hair because rubbing can damage the hair cuticle as well as yanking out your hair.
Hair Shampooing Tip
When you shampoo your hair, it’s not necessary to do the “rinse and repeat” routine unless your scalp is very oily. At a salon, your hair stylist might shampoo your hair twice because it feels great. At home, shampoo your hair once is enough.
