Breast Milk Storage - Breast Milk Pumping Tips
When freezing your breast milk don’t fill the bottle more than three quarter ( ¾ ) full to allow space for expansion. Label the bottles with the date of pumping so you know when the milk is too old to be given to your baby.
Below is a guideline for breast milk storage, you should check with your health care provider or hospital for specific storage instructions.
Storing Breast Milk In a Refrigerator
Breast milk that is not used immediately after pumping should be refrigerated. This help to inhibit the growth of bacteria. If refrigerated, expressed breast milk can be kept up to 48 hours (depending on the temperature of the fridge). If longer storage is required, freeze the milk.
Storing Breast Milk In a Refrigerator Freezer Compartment
In a freezer compartment inside a refrigerator, breast milk can be kept up to six months.
Storing Breast Milk In a Separate Freezer - Deep Freeze
In a freezer with -20 degree celcius, breast milk can be kept for up to 12 months.
Breast Milk Storage Tip
If you want to add more breast milk to a container with frozen milk, first refrigerate all freshly expressed milk until cold then add it to the frozen milk. Never add warm milk to frozen milk.
Thawing Frozen Breast Milk
Frozen breast milk can be defrosted in the refrigerator over night or by holding the container under warm water. Don’t thaw frozen breast milk in a microwave or in a pan of boiling water.
